Mathletics Puzzle Contest 2010

PNG Paradise High School, we have organized “Mathletics Puzzle Contest” among the students from both system and the private institutions. It will be an annual puzzle contest which consists of different kinds of puzzles of different levels; Primary (G7&8), Lower Secondary (G9&10), and Higher Secondary (G11&12).

The purpose of this contest is to boost interest towards Math, create a competitive atmosphere between the students, and strengthen the critical thinking skills of students. The test consists of 20 puzzles and it requires some basic math skills like addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.

 

The participants from Primary, Lower Secondary and Higher Secondary take different level    questions according to their levels. The contest took place at 9:00 am at PNG Paradise High School on Saturday, August 28. It lasted only 1hour 30 minutes. There were more than 300 students from sixteen schools. The participant schools are June Valley, Ted Diro, Sacred Heart, New Erima, Korobosea International, POMIS, Jubille Secondary, Della Sale Secondary, Caritas Secondary, Marienville Secondary, St. Joseph College, Don Bosco Techical School, St. Charles Secondary, Gerehu Secondary, Tokorara Secondary and PNG Paradise High School.

 

MATHLETICS PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY

The Mathletics Puzzle Contest Prize-Giving Ceremony has taken part on 18th of September 2010. The Top 20 students, their parents, teachers, and the principals of the participant schools attended to ceremony. The Master of Ceremony after welcoming the guests, called everyone to rise for National Anthem and Pledge. Then he gave some information about the contest. Later on, the principal of PNG Paradise High School went up on the stage to give his opening remarks.

Upper Primary, then Lower Secondary and lastly Upper Secondary students got their prizes. Firstly, the students whose positions were from 20 to 11, then the students whose positions were from 10 to 4 went up to stage. Lastly the top 3 students without their positions being announced were called from each category respectively. The MC had a chat with top 3 students and their parents about their performance. The students whose positions were from 20 to 11, got their Certificate of Participation, our school’s cap and a mug. The students whose positions were from 10 to 4, got their Certificate of Participation, our school’s cap, a mug and a clock. And top three students got the same prizes plus medals and money prize. Money prizes are as follows;

After the prize giving session finished, Port Moresby International School Head of Mathematics Department Mr Geoff Walters gave the closing remark. The students, their parents, teachers and principals seem very happy. Everyone had a good time. From our school for Lower Secondary Rebecca TOBENA and for Upper Secondary Ray BOBBY and James WAKRIMA made it to the top 20. Congratulations!
