On the 8th of May, Paradise High School held the 8th Annual Inter-school Speech Competition at the open stage. The schools that have participated are; Jubilee Catholic Secondary, St Charles Lwanga Secondary, Port Moresby International (POMIS),        St Joseph’s International Catholic College, Kopkop College, Sogeri National High, Koiari Park Adventist High, Gerehu Secondary and De La Salle Secondary. The judges for this event were Mr. Elias Kawas from UPNG, Mr. Joe Harry from IBS, Ms. Jemimah Nui from NAUFM and Ishmael Paul from IBS. This event was coordinated by PHS English Department.
The speech topics that were presented were; Proper housing for teachers, Violence against women is a global issue, Child abuse is an issue, Police brutality and Why am I proud to be a Papua New Guinean. There were a total of 22 contestants from different schools who took part in the event. This year the speech contest was interesting due to the many point of views delivered on stage by each competitor, some were straight to the point where as others were a little more comical than serious.
The speech contest ended with a musical performance from grade 12 students from PHS. As they performed, the judges were doing the task of calculating the score and average of the speakers and who was going to be in the first place, second place, and third place.
The winners were the following;
Name School Score/200
1st Place Kristobella Haro Paradise High School 182
2nd Place Natalie-Abbie Sabath Jubilee Catholic Secondary School 172
3rd Place Marcellinus Pinoko St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School 168

Every participant was a winner, with averages only differencing by 1 to 2 points. Hopefully they all had a good time participating in the 8th Annual Speech Contest and we hope to see them all next year. We feel happy to say that even though it was time consuming to organize such event but it was worth it in the end.
